I Can Cross The Sea, 2021, paint, paper, wrapping paper, printed reproductions, fabric, 24 x 24 in, 60.9 x 60.9 cm
More about this work - This is a “Song Painting”, in which I listened to a song written by my husband for our band as I worked, piecing together objects on hand that fit with the spirit of the music. I am seeking not to illustrate, but to extend the experience of the song. In addition to this original, I’ve made a small batch of limited-edition prints of this work. If interested, please see the Print Shop.
Included in this work is ephemera collected by my grandmother. A music teacher, she used clippings and items she saved to create bulletin boards in her schoolroom during the mid-1900s. The illustration is by the artist Jean Oldham and was on the cover of the periodical, The Farm Journal. The wrapping paper is from the same time and was also collected by my grandmother.
