Monique Aiuto (b. 1973) grew up in Tecumseh, Michigan then moved to New York City where she studied at The Cooper Union (BFA 1996) and Columbia University (MFA 1998). Upon graduation she pursued a career in early childhood development, working as an educator for preschool children and children with autism for 20 years. She has also worked as a musician, recording and touring with her husband in the band The Welcome Wagon (Asthmatic Kitty Records). Through this time she has maintained a practice as a visual artist. Her recent work in collage combines paper, paint, and drawn elements, as well as keepsake materials—wallpaper, wrapping paper, greeting cards, etc.—that were collected by her grandmother. Using this approach allows Monique to examine the passage of time and our relationships with past generations. Monique lives in Brooklyn, NY with her family.
